Welding & Engineering were engaged to install pre-fabricated steelwork supplied by the client. During material reviews completed by W&E and Lewis Bradford it was found that the steel supplied for the project was not compliant with NZ Standard for chemical composition as determined by Mill Certificates – because of this, prior to commencement, material samples were taken and sent for further analysis. Chemical analysis revealed elevated levels of Silicon content meaning that paint needed to be removed for large-scale magnetic particle testing. These tests revealed the presence of ‘cold-cracking’ int the toes of a large portion of the welds.
To remedy these defects, new welding procedures were generated to enable defective material to be removed and re-welded. Further to this, mechanical tests were completed to ensure the non-compliant material met the required tensile and yield requirements of the engineer.
Following the above remedial works, the steelwork was erected with many adjustments made to ensure a precise fit of the unique design.
The project was completed successfully with the client receiving sign-off for materials compliance from the engineer as meeting the required NZ design standards.
