210 ST ASAPH STREET (HERITAGE DEVELOPMENT)

In this development, our client set about ensuring the continued presence of the R Buchanan & Son City Foundry which was built in 1906. The intension here was to strengthen the existing building and extend it sympathetically in a way that does not detract from the Heritage façade. To achieve this, a new building was built on the South Side of the original structure, which enveloped the heritage building while also serving to provide significant seismic stability.

The challenge for W&E was to accurately survey and detail the new building to tie the two structures together to work in unity.

During this project, W&E worked closely with all parties (Architects, Engineers, Client) to ensure the design brief was achieved. Following some early setbacks relating to foundation errors during work completed by the ground-works sub-contractor, considerable updates to the design were required to correct the shear-key interfaces between the eccentric brace frames and the slab.
